Meets on third Wednesdays   1/18, 2/15, 3/21, 4/18 etc.

MN Sara Beckleman invites you to attend the January meeting og the Dallas Historic Tree Committee meeting on January 18,  Here is the mission of the DHTC.

Our Mission
  • We work with individuals and organizations throughout the Metroplex to promote wise and responsible stewardship of our urban forest resources.
  • We support the concept of sustainable communities through responsible land use, proper planning and balanced growth.
  • We work to help foster creative solutions to the problems that arise when nature is threatened by urban expansion and redevelopment.
  • We work to find, recognize, protect, preserve and properly maintain irreplaceable trees in our urban landscapes.
  • We are a nonprofit, 501(c) (3) corporation, established in June 23rd, 1995 and we are governed by our Board of Trustees according to our bylaws, established during our inception.

I asked Sara what else the DHTC does.  She told me:
we are looking for people to help with research through the Library of Congress and other libraries and Educational Institutions for old maps showing Indian trails.  We will also need someone with graphics experience to work on overlaying the trails onto current maps of Texas.  We plan to have several overlays (campsites, what tribes, etc.)  We also discuss events (we are planning an event on April 6th to formally recognize an Indian Marker Tree, where the Tribal Elders will come down from Oklahoma to acknowledge the tree as either Comanche or Cherokee.  We have an anthropologist working with us, who is taking time off from her job as a professor to help plan this event.  She has an excellent relationship with the Tribal elders in Oklahoma.  We also have a team that goes out and measures potential Indian Marker Trees that are nominated, plus we have ceremonies to acknowledge historic trees (we recently had an event in Downtown Dallas to acknowledge the Pecan Grove in Pioneer Cemetery, next to Pioneer Plaza and the Convention Center, and issued a proclamation and certificate to the city (accepted by Karen Woodard, representing the Park Department.

Meeting Location -
