Jeff Quayle field trip to Marion Sansom Park, Fort Worth
2501 Roberts Cut Off Road, Fort Worth, TX 76114
Overlooking the Lake Worth dam and the West Fork Trinity River

Marion Sansom Park is a City of Fort Worth park overlooking the dam at Lake Worth, at the beginning of the west Fork of the Trinity River. Camp Carter YMCA and NAS JRB are located just across the lake and the river to the south. Numerous trails are available, maintained as part of an agreement with DORBA (Dallas Off Road Bicycle Association). Primarily limestone outcrops with deciduous woodlands, riparian habitats and wetland habitats near the dam outflow. An area just below the dam contains many areas to search for fossils, plus limestone outcroppings, where water from the dam flows over these outcroppings, creating small cascades and waterfalls. The hills above the dam and river contain many open rocky limestone prairie outcrops with flora typical of our Grand Prairie soils.

This is a moderately difficult hike on somewhat loose limestone in some spots. Long pants, sturdy footwear, plenty of fluids, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellant are recommended. You may also wish to bring field guides, cameras, binoculars, etc.

Meet at the farthest paved entrance road to the west at the newly rebuilt pavilion at 2501 Roberts Cut Off Road, just south of Jacksboro Highway.

An RSVP is required. Please email
s-quaylei@att.net or call Jeff Quayle at 817-729-0283 for more information.

Fieldtrips and walks start promptly, so if you RSVP and you will be late or can't make it, please let me know ahead of time.
