Galveston by Bobette & Larry Brasfield - NTC Monthly Meeting (AT)

Wednesday, June 6, 2012     6:30 PM

Topic:  “Conservation Opportunities and Nature Areas in the Galveston Area”

When Spanish explorers arrived on a small barrier island off the coast of an uncharted land they called it Malhado, Isle of Misfortune.  Known as Galveston today, geology and climate have blessed and cursed the island.  Barely 8 feet above sea level and a storms’ surge away from oblivion,  Galveston was destined to become a great port where thousands of immigrants would enter the North American Continent, where pirates walked, US Civil War battles raged, and organized crime ruled until 1960.

The same geology and climate that shaped her human history have also created a unique natural environment.  Galveston Island and the surrounding environs are a part time home for half of all North American Bird species.  Turtle lookouts patrol the beach in search of nesting turtles, alligators glide through near by bayous, leaping dolphins are a common sight in the bay and just off shore in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary manta rays and whale sharks soar above reefs in breathless proximity to our massive oil and gas industry.

Please join us June 6th when Bobette and Larry Brasfield share the story of Galveston including a multitude of cultural and natural science options for your next visit.  Oh, and eating and drinking establishments as well!

Galveston, where crashing waves are prelude to children’s shouts and mysteries still abound.
