The Connemara Conservancy invites Texas Master Naturalists (TMN) and others interested in preserving native tallgrass prairies to join us on Saturday, November 14, 2009 to reintroduce little bluestem tallgrass plants to the Connemara Meadow Preserve. This activity (pre-approved for TMN volunteer hours) will involve digging little bluestem sod at a site east of McKinney and transplanting it to the Connemara Meadow Preserve in northern Plano.

The purpose of this activity is to enhance the presence of native tallgrasses in the Preserve by reintroducing this key component of the prehistoric tallgrass prairie ecosystem. We will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the farm of Bill and Fran Woodfin in McKinney and collect the little bluestem sod from a neighboring farm; the grass plants/sod will be transported to the Preserve and relocated to a site that has been prepared.

Volunteers should bring work gloves, boots, and shovels. Also helpful would be lots of 30 to 50 gallon garbage bags, and several 5-gallon buckets; we have found harvesting prairie sod is made easier by lining 5-gallon buckets with the garbage bags, placing the sod into the bucket, and transporting the sod inside the bag. If you don't have a pickup truck and want to help transport the sod in a trunk or back of a SUV, please bring a tarp or liner as the grass bags tend to leak a bit. Come even if you can't help transport the sod, because digging it up is the hardest part of this, and the more shovels and people to operate them, the better! Based on our past experience with these activities, we should be finished with by noon.
