Special Training Session at LLELA by Dr. Ken Steigman
Saturday, December 01 2007, 9:00am - 12:00pm
Hello Master Naturalists,

We are planning to have a class/workday to learn about seed collection and prairie restoration on Saturday, December 1, at 9:00 a.m. in the LLELA offices at 1801 N. Mill St., Suite A, Lewisville, TX.

With the cooler temperatures arriving, seed collection time is drawing to a close. Yes, there are still seeds to collect, namely Indian Grass, as well as some of the sturdier seed heads that last for quite some time, Purple Coneflower (Echinacea augustifolia), False Foxglove (Penstemon cobaea) and Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccafolium).  It is also time to start turning our attention to another method of restoration - transplanting.

Sometimes seed collection isn’t enough. Whether it is a plant that doesn’t produce viable seed or urban “development” that will take out yet one more remnant prairie, relocation of live plants is an extremely successful tool in the restorationist’s toolbelt.  Dr. Ken Steigman, director of LLELA, will show you the tools, techniques and some of his personal tricks to properly and successfully move these precious materials.  The inside class is to be followed by actual field digging (local site to be determined) and transplanting at LLELA.  LLELA-modified sharpshooter shovels will be provided (up to 20) for the activity. So bring your gloves, water, lunch, and, if you have one, your own personal favorite shovel (believe it or not, I have one), and we will have fun getting down in the dirt.

Even though we are planting at LLELA, I have collection sites and potential collection sites from Rockwall to Tarrant counties and beyond, so whatever chapter you belong to, there will be dig sites within your chapter boundaries. Even if you can only help with the digging at the donor site, any help is appreciated.  Come to the advanced training opportunity on Dec. 1, and you will be prepared to help rescue prairie plants from the bulldozers and restore prairie land in North Texas.  Please RSVP to me at freiheit@unt.edu if you plan to attend.

As always, thank you for all that you do. Each one of us can make the world a little better, and together we can make a better world.

Thank you,

Richard
