NTX: Outreach: Oakland Cemetery Community black light / moth / insect / iNat event / bioblitz
Oakland Cemetery 3900 Oakland Circle Dallas, TX 75215
Sunday, July 28, from 8:00pm – 11:00pm
**Note: Sometimes this location shows up as the house across the street when using GPS. Should see large iron gates and a small guard house, which is the main entrance into Oakland. Gates will be staying open for the event. Location is on S Malcom X Blvd between cross streets McDermott Ave and Pine St (behind Opportunity Park).
Join NTMNs and guests as we look for nocturnal pollinators and other invertebrates in the historic Oakland cemetery. We will be identifying and documenting these insects using iNaturalist (public iNat project link for Oakland below). Founded in 1890, Oakland Cemetery covers 50 total acres of old growth timber, native prairie remnant, brushy areas and 130+ years of Dallas history inside its gates. We will have multiple black light stations set up throughout the property, and participants are also invited to bring your own setups if desired. We welcome friends, families, children and other community members to this event, and we’ll get started around 8:00pm.
Parking is ok anywhere inside cemetery gates (several paved and unpaved roads throughout the cemetery, and parking along any of these is ok). Please do not park on the grass. Lawn chairs and coolers are welcome, and we will have bug spray and water available but you may want to bring your own as well.
Note there are no restrooms on the property.
