A collection of voucher specimens of plants found in Dallas County to be used for educational purposes. Plants include grasses, native and non-native wildflowers, and signature species such as Texas buckeye, trout lily, and Hexalectris orchid.
Volunteers will collect, press, preserve, mount and store plants. Other tasks include photography and photo publishing, preparing outreach displays, maintaining a database. Volunteers will receive training from the Botanical Research Institute of Texas and individual trainers.
2024 Activities – 10 volunteers with 101 hours of service performed
- 2 field workdays for the collection and pressing of new specimens.
- Plant identification and mounting workday at Texas Discovery Gardens.
- We gave a brief talk introducing the Herbarium to the new Master Naturalist class.
- We did a training class prior to the Chapter Meeting explaining the Herbarium and the process of plant collection, identification and mounting.
- Outreach events: Native Plants and Prairies Day, World Migratory Bird Day at TRAC, Community Event Day at TRAC
- Filed and reorganized the Permanent and Education specimens housed at Texas Discovery Gardens.
