Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest

Spring Creek Forest is an area of bottomland forest and prairie, with many trees 100-300 years old, native grasses, wildflowers and a large variety of wildlife. Over 630 species of plants and animals have been observed there. It is preserved and protected as a cultural and natural resource for study and enjoyment by the public. The Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest was established in 1987 and is sponsored by the City of Garland Parks and Recreation Department.

Volunteers help maintain the preserve by removing invasive species, clearing trails, removing woody growth to keep the prairie clear, maintaining bird nest boxes. They also assist with nature walks. Work sessions are held monthly on the Saturday following the first Tuesday of the month, September through May.  Sometimes additional work sessions are scheduled. There are no activities June through August.

2023 Activities – 21 volunteers with 491 hours of service performed

• Hosted monthly activities for habitat workdays, zoom lecture series, and guided hikes
• Other education and outreach events include: New Years Day public hike, small-group nature walks, Junior Master Naturalist training, Falls 2023 NTMN Big Chapter Project, NTMN new class forest field trips, annual trout lily walks, City of Garland Trash Bash, high school volunteer workday, NTMN herbarium collection, and the 2^nd annual Moth Night
• Eagle Scout projects installed bluebird boxes and trail signage
