Schools/Community Habitats

Project Title:  Schools/Community Habitats

Education, outreach and service to schools, community or public properties and community organizations by assisting them in planning, establishing and/or maintaining wildscapes, gardens, native prairies, and outdoor learning centers. Schools/Community Habitats is designed for small-scale projects or beginning efforts. All new venues must be pre-approved. Send new venue information to activities@ntmn.org for review prior to initiating activities. Separate project proposals will need to be written for venues which become very extensive with wide-ranging activities.

Volunteers teach school students, teachers, parents, and community groups the importance of restoring natural areas, establishment of habitat for pollinators and native species, and best practices in the management of natural resources. Volunteers help groups plan their project, advise them on sources of materials as needed, teach them how to construct and install the bird houses, gardens, etc., and provide assistance in maintenance of the property.

Approved Schools/Community Habitats Venues:

William Elementary School, Garland ISD.  Site Lead David Parish
Keep Garland Beautiful/Armstrong Park, Garland.  Site Lead Reba Collins
SeedSchool.  Site Lead Jennifer Stuart
Warmack Library. Site Lead Sierra Carter

2023 Activities – 27 volunteers with 340 hours of service performed (all sites)

  • Keep Garland Beautiful/Armstrong Park – KGB currently maintains a community-based Monarch Way Station Garden at Armstrong Park, a city of Garland public park. We sponsored six garden work sessions in 2023, engaging with neighbors and other volunteers. In 2023, we renewed our partnership with the New World Neighborhood Watch group whose volunteers came to most of the 2023 sessions. We also had a Helpful Honda crew from the North Texas Honda Dealers come for our August Garden session for their Random Acts of Helpfulness project. NTMN volunteers assisted KGB with native plant gardening advice and shared the importance of preserving natural areas with all of the volunteers.
