Organic gardens, including a butterfly garden, open daily to the community and supported, in part, by City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department. Its purpose is to teach effective ways to restore, conserve and preserve nature in an urban setting, with a focus on gardening organically and sustainably.
Volunteers work with plant propagation and maintenance, educational programs for school groups and the public and special events such as workshops, Garden Walks and public festivals.
Workdays in the Benny Simpson Garden are every Tuesday 8am-noon. Check the calendar for more details and for any special Saturday workdays.

2023 Activities – 46 volunteers with 2,039 hours of service performed
- Participated in the maintenance of the 7 1/2 acres with a focus on The Benny Simpson Native Plant Collection, removing invasive bedstraw and vines from the gardens.
- Participated as docents in the Butterfly Conservatory. the outdoor butterfly garden, and the Reptile House.
- Welcomed visitors during the year and especially during the State Fair of Texas.
- Helped in the greenhouse with seed starting, bumping seedlings up into larger pots and working on the Spring and Fall Plant events, educating the public with native plant selections
- Made arrangements for the cleaning of the concrete panels on the front of the building and the cutting back and cleanup of the beds
