The rise of plastics in clothing and accessories is one of the largest drivers in environmental concerns like microplastics, chemical pollution, and excess waste volumes. This talk offers an overview of the issue, including systemic accelerating factors and some actions to take at various levels, as well as current and future opportunities for correction.
Our speaker is Sarah Mosher. She is a theatre designer specializing in costume design and technology, a fiber artist, and an Assistant Professor at Baylor University. She has an interest in universal design and design systems, cultivating design thinking in students, and engaging with questions about design lifecycles across disciplines. She has a passion for costume history, specifically the impact on society, and reflection of the values of each time and place. Mosher is interested in the critical area of sustainability in the textile and clothing industry, and the exploration of how to apply this thinking to theatrical construction. She has worked professionally as a costume designer for theatre, opera, film, and dance in Seattle and in Central Texas. Her work has encompassed interdisciplinary devised work and she has a passion for the dramaturgical work inherent in theatrical design.
There will be a related AT opportunity on Saturday, August 23rd, from 12 pm to 2 pm at City Park (1515 South Harwood St, Dallas, Texas 75215). Sarah will be leading a Bioplastics Workshop, which provides learners an opportunity to create a variety of bioplastics and engage in an exploration of applications in costume and fashion.
