Brookhaven College Garden and Sustainability Project

A pollinator garden with native plants and nectar-producing flowers, including milkweed, which will attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators and a demonstration garden for outreach and education.

Volunteers advise and assist with design, installation and maintenance of the garden, as well as participate in education and outreach events

2024 Activities – 13 volunteers with 185 hours of service performed

• New metal sign installed Feb 2024
• Began the process of adding a tallgrass prairie in the area around the garden. (Fall 2024)
• Held twice monthly maintenance workdays of 2-3 hours (weather permitting).
• Mentored Brookhaven college student Shanelle on native gardening, seed collection, and path maintenance. She worked part-time through DCCD to support the Pollinator Garden.
• Hosted an ‘Intro to iNaturalist’ class for 20 students from the NTMN class of 2024 (March 26, 2024)
• Hosted Brookhaven Head Start, ages 2-5 years old with a butterfly release in the garden (April 2024)
• Hosted 80 Montessori Institute of North Texas teachers and administrators from across the country in the garden to discuss interconnectivity of life and how the Pollinator Garden impacts the local community and the importance of sustainability. (July 13 2024)
• Christmas Bird Count CBC location (Dec 2024)
• Encouraged Citizen Science through iNaturalist with 600 observations representing 315 species. This represents an increase of 33 new-to-garden species observations in 2024.
• Added new native plants with seeds from Native American Seed and native grasses grown in Dallas County Community College greenhouse and have continued removing non-native invasive plants.
