Brookhaven College Garden and Sustainability Project

A pollinator garden with native plants and nectar-producing flowers, including milkweed, which will attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators and a demonstration garden for outreach and education.

Volunteers advise and assist with design, installation and maintenance of the garden, as well as participate in education and outreach events

2023 Activities – 27 volunteers with 590 hours of service performed

• Continued removing non-native invasive plants.
• Cleaned up overgrown pathways
• Held bi-weekly maintenance workdays of 2-3 hours
• Selected as a NTMN Class of 2023 class project
• Hosted 81 students from Brookhaven Head Start, ages 2-5 years old, with four stations: Sensory Garden Walk, Native sunflowers, Insects in the Garden, Animals in the garden.
• Hosted 86 Montessori Institute of North Texas teachers and administrators from across the country in the garden to explain the purpose of the Pollinator Garden and the importance of sustainability.
• Hosted: Evening in the Garden: Night Pollinators with Sam Kieschnick. Had 6 light stations to attract night insects.
• Assisted Eagle Scout candidate Azure to install 6 bluebird, eastern screech owl, and barred owl nest boxes to improve bird habitat.
• Encouraged Citizen Science through iNaturalist with 1230 observations representing 282 species. Sixty-seven species observations were logged during the City Challenge BioBlitz for 2023
• Added 40 plants across 26 native species
• Tagged Monarch butterflies during their Fall migration for Monarch Watch.
