Dallas Parks and Open Spaces

Beautification, conservation, restoration, maintenance of Dallas parkland and open spaces in accordance with the guidelines, directions and beautification agreements of Dallas Park and Recreation Dept. Project goals are to involve the community in caring for parks, educate the public about wise use of natural resources, build pride in caring for city parks, and promote appreciation and conservation of the city’s green spaces.

Volunteers engage in plant and wildlife surveys, seed harvesting, invasive species removal, native species planting, trash and debris removal, as well as education and outreach events.

2024 Activities – 39 volunteers with 355 hours of service performed (all sites)

• Northaven Trail:
  • We maintained native plant/pollinator gardens and meadows along the trail. In 2024, volunteers planted and maintained native pollinator gardens in 6 distinct garden beds.
  • We created new native plant gardens. In 2024, volunteers convened at the Royal Park and installed a new garden with hundreds of new native plants. With only manual irrigation, volunteers maintained and babied the new plants through the hot Texas summer. This new garden was part of the Bring Back the Monarchs grant program from NPSOT and will showcase the beauty and benefit of native plants as habitat.
  • We are working on expanding our gardens at Welch Road intersection.
  • Volunteers worked at our Prairie Restoration areas west of Inwood Road and west of Freda Stern Parking Area to plant more native plants and to rid the area of noxious invasive weeds.
  • We met with students from St Marks and ESD to educate them on the need for conservation and how a disused power line easement has become a habitat.
  • We continued to work to transition some of our no mow areas from native annuals to native perennials.
