Previously called Canyon Creek Wetlands and Wildscape – Located at 1001 George Bush Turnpike, Richardson, TX 75080 (south of the Hilton Garden Inn), this project was approved for the chapter in 2022. Volunteers working to restore Blackland Prairie habitat, remove invasive plants, install/monitor bird boxes and plant native trees in riparian areas along Spring Creek.
2024 Activities – 13 volunteers with 270 hours of service performed
- Project name change in 2025 – Prairie Creek Marsh and Wildscape
- Installation of 3 Wood duck nesting boxes and 4 new easter blue bird boxes.
- Completed a terracing experiment for the far north slope to help with erosion.
- Planted 45 pots of blue Gramma rescued from a local construction site…more to follow.
- Cast and/or sowed the following: Blue grama, Little blue stem, Indian grass, Leatrice, Texas Star, Mexican hat, Upper slope seed mix, Bushy blue stem
- Removed about 1/4 acre of KR
- Trash pickup with group of volunteers from Texas Instruments.
- Watered over 100 plants thru the hot summer by hand by transporting gallon jugs on a bi-weekly basis
- Worked with the city of Richardson to get a French drain installed where a new seep piped out of the ground due to the spring being impacted from a massive construction/soil compaction nearby.
- Met with the city of Richardson to formalize our working agreement. MOU is forthcoming.
- Engaged UTD GIS to begin electronically mapping area and documenting typography, flora and fauna
- Established a steering committee, will meet after our monthly workday. We will be identifying and contacting stakeholders to educate them on our efforts and review opportunities for them to get involved.
- We have a signage project that we would like to get a class projects started on but I have not been able to get a return email. Still hoping to do it maybe in 2026 if I can get a response from the chapter.
